days like today always bring up the question... "where were you? " alan jackson even wrote a song with those words and finished with ... "when the world stopped turning.. "
days like today make me remember... i was a senior in high school... sitting in a seniors meeting when the loud speakers told us through broken words... "new york... bombings.. buildings ... we should be okay... "
confusion... fear... shock... racing to pay phones to call loved ones... begging teachers to just let us watch... i was on the newspaper staff at the school and given the honor of writing the front page story on the event... my title... "we will never forget... " and we have not... george w bush's words from that night still echo in our minds...
"...These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation....Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve...Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me."...This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time... None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world. Thank you. Good night and God bless America."
today lets us remember... those lives lost that day... the families that were changed... the men and women who for the past 10 years have fought back ... those who gave their lives fighting... their families back home who give up their time with them so that they might defend our freedom...
and let us remember how lucky we are... that september 11th marks our darkest hour and not our everyday life... that we live in a land of freedom... a land of possibilty... a country that will not fall to the enemy...
pray for those who defend us. pray for their families. pray for our ememies. pray for those who face their own september 11ths everyday of their lives.pray for strong christian leaders to rise up among us. pray for peace.
